In a lake high above the Arctic Circle, ten metres from the shore, a yellow concrete cairn stands on a pile of stones. A wooden walkway runs around it. If you take that walk, you pass from Sweden into Norway, from Norway into Finland and back into Sweden in less time than it takes to tie a bootlace.

Treaty makers have reached for ridgelines and watersheds for centuries when they divided land, as a mountain crest is easy to describe in a treaty. The result is that many borders trace the highest, wildest and least visited ground a country owns. Walk along one and you get glaciers, shepherd villages and passes that once required soldiers, smugglers or forged papers to cross.

These seven treks follow those lines. Some cross three countries in a fortnight. One follows a route used by Allied airmen and Jewish families escaping occupied France. One runs along a frontier you will never cross. Each one is open to you, with the right paperwork, the right season and the stamina to keep climbing.
