In 2004, National Geographic sent writer and explorer Dan Buettner to five places where people seemed to reach the age of 100 far more often than anywhere else, Okinawa in Japan, Sardinia in Italy, the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica, Ikaria in Greece and Loma Linda in California. He called them Blue Zones, after the blue ink a team of demographers had used to circle the relevant regions on a map. The resulting research spawned bestselling books, a cookbook line, licensed community health programmes across dozens of American cities and, inevitably, a long tail of supplement companies and diet plans borrowing the name to sell a promise: eat like the world's longest-lived people, and your metabolism will fall in line.

That promise, in various commercial forms, has become a small industry of its own. A search for Blue Zones-branded reset programmes turns up 21-day guides, 90-day protocols and metabolism reset courses, most claiming some version of the same idea, that a specific eating pattern can switch the body out of fat storage mode. It is worth being direct about this claim before going any further: human fat storage does not work like a switch, and no food, meal pattern or twenty-one day programme resets it like one. Whether the body stores or releases fat is governed by a sustained balance between energy taken in and energy used, moderated by hormones such as insulin and leptin over weeks and months, not by any single dietary trick. Any programme promising to reset that system is selling a metaphor, not a mechanism.

## What the original research actually found
