The auction at the Marston Estate in Northamptonshire had taken the afternoon to £850,000, and the target was £1 million. Jeremy Clarkson, who was running the sale, turned to the guests who had flown in. “Right, there are people here who have arrived in helicopters,” he told the room. “Everyone here who has got a helicopter, I want ten grand.”

He then went round asking for it one by one, “ten grand from you, ten grand from you”, as Sir Chris Hoy described it afterwards on his Sporting Misadventures podcast. Jeremy came away with £150,000, and the afternoon closed on £1 million.

The clay pigeon shoot was organised by Christian Horner, the former Red Bull Formula 1 team principal, in support of Chris’s Tour de 4 charity.
