Hippocrates said it. The wellness industry has co-opted it, diluted it, and sold it back at a premium. But beneath the noise, the actual science of food as medicine has crossed a threshold that demands serious attention.

Nature Medicine published a summary in 2024 of clinical trials showing that dietary interventions can be effective at treating or delaying measurable disease. Not correlating with health outcomes in observational studies, which critics have dismissed for decades as confounded by income and education. Treating disease. In randomised trials. A separate review of 238 randomised controlled trials, published in Nutrition and Dietetics and covering the Mediterranean diet alone, confirmed a consistent, significant reduction in cardiovascular events in people following structured dietary programmes.

The medical establishment still lags behind. US medical students receive fewer than 20 hours of nutrition instruction across their entire training, which amounts to less than one per cent of total lecture time. The result is that many doctors cannot give patients the dietary advice the evidence now supports. The advice, however, is available to anyone willing to read it.
