An American household can now buy a plug-in solar kit for under $300, using hardware certified to a safety standard that did not exist a year ago. Bright Saver, a nonprofit in Oakland, California, that sells [balcony solar kits](https://richdadmagazine.com/article/plug-in-solar-panels-uk-supermarkets) to its members at cost, says a manufacturing partnership with Hoymiles Power Electronics brings a certified kit below that price. Pre-orders for its August batch are open.

Germany's federal network agency recorded [about 430,000 new plug-in solar installations](https://www.bundesnetzagentur.de/SharedDocs/Pressemitteilungen/EN/2026/20260108_EEG.html) in 2025, roughly 3.2 percent of all the solar capacity the country added that year, up from 2.5 percent in 2024. The American market has been close to nothing, and not because the panels behave differently on this side of the Atlantic.
