Scorching summer temperatures have achieved something decades of dress-down Fridays never managed. According to Reuters reporting from Warsaw and London, men across major business hubs, from Tokyo to London's Canary Wharf to the streets of Frankfurt, have been turning up to the office in shorts this year, and the shift shows up as clearly in retail sales figures as it does on the pavement.

## Tokyo led, and Europe followed

Japan's capital set the pace. The Tokyo metropolitan government's long-running Cool Biz campaign, which already relaxed the traditional tie-and-jacket rule, went further this year by actively encouraging staff to drop long trousers altogether, with some offices even opening the door to T-shirts and trainers. As heatwaves intensified across Europe through the summer, office workers elsewhere followed the same path, sometimes with explicit backing from employers and sometimes simply on their own initiative.
