Longevity science has had stranger years, but not many more productive ones. Across 2026, senolytic drugs, which selectively clear the senescent 'zombie' cells that accumulate in ageing tissue, have shown real clinical results rather than laboratory promise alone, with trials reporting reductions in systemic inflammation markers of 40 to 60 per cent and genuine improvements in mobility among older patients. Partial epigenetic reprogramming, the technique that resets a cell's molecular age without erasing its identity, has moved from mice into early primate trials. Mesenchymal stem cell therapy has emerged as a serious tool against the chronic inflammation behind much of heart disease and neurodegeneration. And in April, at a Berlin congress bringing together mitochondrial researchers, microbiome scientists and systems biologists, the field openly reframed its own central question. Ageing, several of the world's leading longevity researchers argued, may not be a defect waiting for a single fix. It may be a progressive loss of coordination between biological systems that were never designed to fall out of sync in the first place.

None of that is small. It represents a field moving, in the space of about eighteen months, from chasing one molecule to understanding a whole system, and from billionaire-funded speculation to a genuine standard of care, with biological age tests increasingly offered alongside the routine blood panel. Longevity, as an actual medical category, has arguably never been in ruder health.
